Among World Economic Forum¡¯s
(WEF) list of 40 information technology (IT), biotechnology,
energy-related ¡®Tech Pioneers¡¯, the president of Solid Technologies,
Chung, Joon, is listed as one of them. On 31st of October,
WEF announced the 40 of the 2003 ¡®Technology Pioneers¡¯ from
10 Countries, which are the US, England, Germany, Sweden,
Denmark, Canada, the Netherlands, Ireland, Australia, as well
as the Republic of Korea.
In terms of nations, the US had the most number of tech pioneers with 26; England and Germany followed with four and two, respectively.
"These 40 companies are true pioneers - their importance lies in how their discovery and development of radical and transformational technologies may present us with alternatives to how we live or do business," says Klaus Schwab, President of the World Economic Forum.
Since year 2000, WEF have been, through a strict selection process, selecting entrepreneurs whose pioneering technologies have left behind encouraging results. This is the first time a Korean venture starter has been selected as a ¡®Tech Pioneer¡¯.
WEF explained that there are five points of criteria for selection:
1. The company must be truly innovative. A new version or repackaging of an already well-accepted technological solution does not qualify as an innovation. The innovation should be recent - not more than two years old. The company should invest significantly in R&D.
2. The company must have the potential to have a substantial long-term impact on business and society in the future.
3. The company should have all the signs of a long-term market leader and should have well-formulated plans for future development and growth.
4. The company must have a product on the market or have proven practical applications of the technology.
5. Leadership. The company must have visionary leadership that plays a critical role in driving the company towards reaching its goals.
The entrepreneur, selected as a Tech Pioneer, will attend the annual WEF general meeting in January of next year at Davos, Switzerland and exchange opinions drawn from technology expertise and entrepreneurial experience with the Foundations members and attendees from each countries.
On another note, Dr Chung, Joon has been selected as the venture entrepreneur of the month by the Korean Small and Medium Business Administration.
