1. System Introduction
As can be seen from the name 1X EV-DO (Evolution Data Only), the system was developed for dedicated data transmission use. The high transmission speed owes to the separation of voice and data channels. Considering the fact that voice and data cannot be synthesized in the same channel, the system maximized traffic by using separate channels. The 1X EV-DO can transmit data at DSL or cable modem speed through existing PCS or mobile telecommunications networks. It boasts low unit cost per byte compared with other 3G telecommunications technologies. It is a dedicated data communications mobile telecommunications technology, which can transmit data at 2.4 Mbps (17x faster that cdma2000 1X) and was recently approved as the standard synchronous 3G technology by ITU. The maximum download speed is up to 2.4 Mbps and covers up to 29 users. The maximum upload speed is 153.6 Kbps. Even compared with IMT-2000, it is fast. Solid Technologies was selected as a KTF BMT company. KTF has plans to commercialize 1X EV-DO service in May, before the 2002 World Cup. ST has formed a consortium with Airvana (www.airvananet.com), a US 3G telecommunications equipment manufacturer to design, develop and launch joint marketing activities in Korea. In preparation of the consortium, Solid Technologies and Airvana are jointly developing necessary 3G Radio Access Network equipment-in other words equipment needed to set up base stations suitable for the domestic market. By combining Solid Technologies' vast experiences and knowledge on optic telecommunications and RF areas with Airvana's innovative mobile telecommunications and IP-based technology, ST will surely provide 1X EV-DO solutions that meet the needs of Korean CDMA operators. Capitalizing on the consortium, ST will provide full support to telcos in laying out 1X EV-DO networks in high-rise buildings, apartment complexes, subways and other office buildings. Currently, KTF BMT is operational in Ilsan area of Korea. Also, fast track (small-AP) is under construction in south area of Seoul, and pilot tests are expected to take place shortly.
Types of 1X EV-DO base station system:
Smart-AP (Smart- Access Point): Base station equipment: 2FA 3Sector (Donor, Remote Separated)
Small-AP (Small-Access Point): Base station equipment: 1FA 3 Sector (Donor, Remote Combined)
Introduction of Airvana (www.airvananet.com)
In March 2000, employees and executives of Motorola, Lucent, Cisco and Nortel Networks gathered in Chelmsford, Massachusetts to set up Airvana. Currently, Airvana designs and manufactures all-IP based 3G Radio Access Network equipment.
